SINOPSE

“FACE(S) OF BASADI” is a performing arts installation concept by Gaby Saranouffi first presented as collaboration with photographer Jodi Bieber. Currently, Gaby Saranouffi has been invited to present the work as a dance film. The work explores the important steps that women in Africa take in their cultural or traditional journeys, e.g.: using the rite of passage as a pillar. Also, looking into the way the Reed Dance Ceremony has been used in some parts of South Africa to encourage and support young girls in their journey to become women.

Sobre Gaby Saranouffi

Gaby Saranouffi, dancer, choreographer and artistic director of ITROTRA Art X Connection. She lives and works in South Africa and Madagascar. Selected by the Malagasy Media as “Artist of the Year 2007” in ‘Dance’ category, of which makes her to be amongst the top 10 people who most contributed to the development of Madagascar, she was decorated and received a medal of “Knights of the Order of Art and Letters and Culture”. Gaby Saranouffi is one of the most important female artist pioneers who has marked the history of dance in Madagascar. She has set up in her country a new strategic concept of a cultural policy that has benefited the people of Madagascar and has opened doors to many Malagasy artists.In July 2020, she was the recipient of the “Standard Bank Award Standing Ovation” with the piece “CORPS/BODY”, co-choreographed with Moeketsi Koena.
