Dancing at Dusk – A moment with Pina Bausch’s The Rite of Spring

In this stunning film, Pina Bausch’s iconic choreography “The Rite of Srping” is danced in an extraordinary setting, Toubab Dialaw Beach, in Senegal. Filmed while the world descended to a lockdown, this piece captures the rehearsal of a dance company especially assembled with 38 dancers from 14 African countries, and documents a unique moment in its preparation for a tour. A rare opportunity to watch one of the world’s greatest dance works.

ABOUT the process

In the spring of 2020, Pina Bausch’s seminal 1975 work “The Rite of Spring” was to go on a world tour. Performed by a company especially assembled with 38 dancers from 14 African countries, this international co-production by Pina Bausch Foundation (Germany), École des Sables (Senegal) and Sadler’s Wells (United Kingdom) should have premiered in March 2020 in Dakar as part of common ground[s], the new project created and developed by Malou Airaudo and Germaine Acogny. However, a few days prior to the premiere, performances were cancelled, as governments from around the world prohibited public gatherings and closed borders due to the new coronavirus pandemic.  Before dissolving and closing, the company took the opportunity to have one last rehearsal at a beach near its headquarters of Senegal’s École des Sables. Filmmaker Florian Heinzen-Ziob and his team were able to capture this unique moment in a stunning film.
